Because it is in dying to this world that we have life everlasting. That is the good news.
The last clip of the Prayer of St Francis (of Assisi, a paisan no less): "for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life. "
Contrary enough to my instincts to make it most likely true.
