POTW Week 41 of 2011

Getting ready to lay that sod in the backyard this morning.  With my fragile physical state, it could be a fairly painful process, but I'm not complaining.... that's not in the MOAM playbook.

ANNOUNCING....

Doug Maxfield

This is My Turf

Today was the first day that I got back to working out on the Cybex since I sprained my ankle and knee on an ill fated Columbus Day Jog/Walk/DragMyFatAss that ended with Dave Bruett giving me a ride home.  But that's a different story.
~
After the workout today, I walked outside to cool down and noticed that the developer across the street had half a pallet of turf rolls, and it seemed like he was done with the landscaper.  So I wandered over and asked him if I could have the leftover pallet... but found out that he had already given it to the Town Park Dept.
~
A lesser man would have dropped the topic then and there.
~
But we are talking about a Mountain of a Man here.
~
I called Mike Lane, over at Park and Recreation and left a voicemail asking if he was going to use the pallet today, and would he consider giving it to me.
~
About 15 minutes later, Mike called back... had already called the developer and said that he was giving the pallet to me.
~
That's called Mountain of a Man Political Clout and you can't get it overnight.
~
Anyway.... I went to the Swampscott Landscapers place on Danvers Road and ordered 2 cubic yards of loam, then bought a tamp and some grass seed at Home Depot.
~
About 100 sf of the back yard with will be looking nice and grassed by about 11:00 AM tomorrow morning.

dougmaxfield said...

To hell with the town park dept., right? always jumping on free shit while good, honest god-fearing Americans are planting grass seed. Well done, good sir. Well done.

Oh Yeah?  Seed THIS, Waterman.

Cain Seems Able

I was riding around in the F150 this  afternoon doing some errands and listening to talk radio when Herman Cain was interviewed talking about his 9-9-9 tax plan.
~
Naturally this is being scrubbed very closely since Cain is getting leadership numbers in the Republican polls for President.  I don't know enough about the details of the plan to be critical at this time, but he was taking hits from the interviewer that the plan would raise taxes.
~
His response was crisp and direct.
~
With Bachmann and Perry making gaffes and losing momentum, and with Romney competent but, frankly, boring.... this guy could be on the rise.
~
What impresses me is that he actually has a plan and is willing to speak plainly about it.   I'm going to start listening and learn more.

Peep Status Reiterated

I just started a Nanepashemet Peep page on Facebook.
~
If you want to be listed as a Nanepashemet Peep, you'll have to friend me, then say something.
~
As amazing as it may seem, many of you have have continued to ask what constitutes being a Nanepashemet Peep. It's a hard question to answer... worthy of a mind of the calibre of a Sartre, Kieerkergard, or other freaking wicked smart deep thinker. All are called, a few will answer, the rest dodged the bullet.

~
Plainly stated... to be a Nanepashemet Peep.... you can't be dead, you can't be an animal, and you have to be either annoying or inspirational.
~
And you can never ask which category you have fallen into.
~
That's it. So enjoy your Honor/Disgrace.

Frugal v Bernie and Phyl

In a continuing effort to find peace in the morning, I've run into another perpetrator who is actually more annoying that Bernie and Phyl.
~
Kathleen "Fannie" Doxer runs Frugal Fannies, and her ubiquitous morning ads are slightly less worse than a slow drag of fingernails diagonally across a chaulkboard.
~
I'm all in favor of selling your stuff, but the display of ego by these retailers is really stomach retching.

Amazing Corn Maze Idiots

This is undoubtably the dumbest thing that I've heard in years.
~
How much do you want to bet that these Yahoos who called the police to help them find their way out of a freaking cornfield are Democrats?
~
It takes a Village.

Sign of the Times

I'm thinking about putting one of these cool historical signs on my house.  They look nice on the homes in Old Town, Marblehead.
~
Trouble is, our house is a split level, circa 1960.
~
So I'll have to modify the sign somewhat....  starting with the fish.
~
I won't be going with the Golden Cod.  Our sign will have this cool Bluefish that I bought on Amazon.
~
And I think I'll use a Celtic Font for the lettering, just to tamper a little bit with the old Yankee letters that are on most of the signs.
~
On the whole, the sign will be a contemporary rendition, and hopefully will piss off some of the Townies.

Founding Fathers Vision

Gave all of my tax information to the accountant today.  I can't put it off any longer.
~
The Federal Government is my biggest creditor in so many ways.  It has unlimited power to turn our lives upside down.  Make a mistake.... do not pass Go... go directly to Jail.
~
I've said it before... and it's sounding like a broken record... But.....
~
Is this what the Founding Fathers, who risked their lives to throw off British tyranny, had in mind????

Maiming the Mormon

Mitt Romney is a Mormon.
~
Some Bible toting Texas minister who supports Governor Perry is on the news tonight claiming that Mitt is not a Christian.   Dr. Robert Jeffress told NBC News. "Mitt Romney's a good moral person but he's not a Christian. Mormonism is not Christianity. It has always been considered a cult by the mainstream of Christianity. So it's the difference between a Christian and a non-Christian."
~
Guess what Dr. Halleluyahh??? Romney's not a Jew either.  Or a Catholic.... or a Jehovah's Witness.
~
So what is the dimwitted Minister's point?  Obviously that if you don't worship the incarnation of God that the good Minister follows, then you shouldn't be the President.
~
I most disrespectfully disagree.
~
And for the record.... the Romans considered the early Christians to be a Cult... and had no trouble feeding them to the Lions in the Coliseum.
~
That tends to be the underlying policy of deep thinking bigots like Dr. Jeffress.
~
I'm not ready to throw the coveted Nanepashemet Nod to Romney.... that decision will take a long time to play out......but Perry's chances have taken a dive if he hangs around with wierdos like Dr. Halleluyahh.

It's a shame the Romans didn't have enough lions.

Campaign help for Senator Brown

Speaking of silly, Nancy Pelosi, the outspoken and undiscerning former Speaker of the House, sounded off on the Senator Scott Brown comment about not wanting to see his opponent with her clothes off.
~
Nancy says that the comment proves that Scott is "clueless".
~
The thing that amazes me here is how such an idiot as Nancy Pelosi could rise through the ranks of the House of Representatives.  How could anybody hope to give this ridiculous exchange between Scott and his Democratic opponent any credibility?    Apparently Pelosi hopes to.
~
Nancy... Am I to believe that you wish the Senator had stated that he wanted to see his Democratic opponent naked?   It's so hard to figure out what people really mean when the silliness starts, isn't it?
~
I have to believe that Pelosi's criticism can only aid Scott's campaign.  Stick around Nancy.  We need to cushion Scott's polls.

POTW Week 40 of 2011

We're in the 4th Qtr. of a year where there's been a lot of insecurity in business.  The stock market has been a mess, we have a President who seems to think that the producers are the bad guys, the unemployment rate is over 10%, and no policy seems to be working to tweak us out of the economic doldrums.  Plus, look what happened to the Red Sox!!!
~
I don't mean to sound freaking negative, but we seem to have our big toe testing the water up at Shit's Creek.
~
But at least we have the Peep of the Week.
~
ANNOUNCING....
Nanepashemet Peeps of the Week for the 40th Week of 2011

Mike Nestor
Tommy O'Shea
Pat Piscatelli
Brendt D'Orio
Hank Williams, Jr.
Serena Williams

Peeps who know me best, know that a Mountain of a Man like me isn't prone to fret and worry.   Although there is a little bit of concern trying to pierce this impenetrable thick skin.

Tis the Silly Season

Once again, the enraged lefties will be throwing the kitchen sink at Republican US Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts.  Can't they see how this negative stuff is ultimately self destructive to themselves?
~
They can't... because the Democrats truly believe that we are sheep.  That we will believe the type of positioned statements that they throw in these situations.  Maybe they take this position because a sizable amount of them do have these herding, unthinking tendencies.  It takes a Village for them,  Not their own two feet and initiative.
~
Already, his announced Democratic opponent,  Harvard Law Professor Elizabeth Warren, has hauled out this juicy bit from when Brown was  stupid college student like all of us.  If I had his looks and could have cashed in when I had college bills, I would have been all in.
~
The Democrats are trying to rev up outrage that Brown has made fun of her looks.  He basically said that he would not like to look at her with her clothes off.... an honest answer that I wholly concur with.
~
Brown will elicit a ton of negativity this election season... just like the last.  Because the lefties can't believe that there are people that don't need them in their stronghold here in Massachusetts Kennedy country.

Big Mo Returning

There is a major Westerbeke Marine Diesel distributor, Hansen Marine,  located about a half mile from my house.  Makes me think that I should consider powering the Chamberlain Marblehead Gunning Dory with an inboard, 12HP diesel engine, instead of a Honda outboard located in the floor well..
~
That's right... I'm staring to rev up the Gunning Dory again.  This blog is supposed to be about boatbuilding after all.... isn't it?   And I have all of the dory components... the frames, bottom and keels... in a nice unused space at the Peabody Nanepashemet Telecom Warehouse.
~
All I have to do is set up the frames on the strongback and secure them to the bottom, add the keels, and I should be cutting and adding the strip cedar planking.
~
Time is still at a premium though.   And Joanne is asking me to put together some shelving to camoflage the elevator door at the Sundance house.
~
But I can sense the momentum returning.

Nice Work Steve Jobs. You did well . RIP

Steve Jobs, Chairman and a founder of Apple Computer, died today.  I've been coincedentally waxing away about the Apple iPhone recently, and feel the need to note Jobs passing.
~
The first great thing that Apple did was to popularize the idea of a personal computer.  Other companies had been in the forefront, but it was Jobs who took Steve Wozniak's Apple 1 invention and captured the imagination of nerds like myself who thought a lot about how things might be different if we had access to individual and managable computers.
~
Apple came out with the Apple 1, Apple ll and Apple lll.  I never purchased one, having access to a Tandy Radio Shack TRS-80, buy I did do some consulting to teach some clients how to use the Apples.
~
You would not believe how clumsy and technical these early machines were, but they did three things.... they enabled you to automate spreadsheets so you could construct financial models easily, they did word processing, which was a quantum leap over typewritting, and they allowed you to collect and manipulate data in data bases.
~
All of the commands were keyboard based, and you moved the cursor by memorizing keyboard combinations.  If you were really nerdy like I was at the time, you got pretty good at it.
~
Jobs had a big part in getting people aware of the potential of personal computing... but he took it the next step when he popularized the mouse with the introduction of the MacIntosh.  Once again, Apple didn't invent the mouse, but they... through the marketing genius of Jobs.... captured the imagination of the computing public.   I paid $4,000 for my first Mac, a 128K black and white beauty that stored data on diskettes.
~
Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak
Apple also had a vastly superior and simple operating system, but lost the advantage to IBM and Microsoft when they disallowed the use of the system on competing hardware.   The world was then divided between Apple computers and IBM compatible computers using Microsoft MS-DOS based software.
~
Although Apple lost market share, it stayed in the game because the Mac and its operating system were better, but applications grew faster, particularly in business for the MS-DOS based IBM systems.
~
Jobs resurrected the company with the introduction of the iPods and iPhones.   Once again, he popularized and easy to use interface and made you feel cool using it.
~
I read accounts that he was a jerk and an egomaniac, and really rode roughshod over the other Founder, Steve Wozniak, who had opted out of management at Apple before the introduction of the Mac.
~
But he was one of the rare people of the age who changed the wants and behaviors of his entire generation.
~
Nice job Steve.  You did well . RIP

iPhone Buzz

I went into a Sprint retail store on route 114 in Peabody today and asked about trade up programs for when the iPhone came out.  The young lady looked at me like I was the stupid one and said that she had no information on that.... that they didn't carry the iPhone.
~
Not a good sign.
~
Sprint is betting the house on the iPhone, and the front line workers aren't even up to speed.  Sprint has been one of my best customers in the past, and I do know a lot about the company.   So I'm not going to get too critical.  But their employees should be buzzing about the iPhone instead of looking at me like I'm asking a stupid question.

The Knock on Knox

This is the guy who killed Meredith Kercher, the roommate of Amanda Knox.  Knox and her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito.
~
Rudy Guede had DNA all over the apartment and his footprints and handprints were found with in Kercher's blood.  He had a criminal background and had just met Kercher.  He claims that while he was taking a shit, Knox and Sollecito came in and committed the murder.  But their DNA never showed up in evidence.  Seems like quite a stretch.
~
There will be those who will say that Knox got off because she is a White American.   But all the evidence shows that she spent four years in Italian prison because she was fingered by Guede.
~
Reports at the time say that Knox was acting weirdly.   But she was a 20 year old college kid.   I would had  hated to be put on trial for how I acted as a 20 year old.  She is probably guilty of stupidity and bad behavior, but I just don't buy the murder rap.
~
This case is closed.  Justice has taken in inexhorable, expensive course in Italy.  I hope that the Kercher family can find closure for the heinous loss of their daughter and sister.

Big Week

Do you ever get the feeling that you have a big week ahead of you?... that a major advance or breakthrough is in the air?... that things are shortly to be permanently better???... and for no particular reason?
~
That's me this morning.
~
I do have a meeting for one of our hotel customers, and have the regular telecom routine this week, but this feeling transcends those events.  Something big is ready to break... and I have no idea what it is yet.
~
Have a nice week!  I'll report back to the Peeps this weekend.

Sprint for the Apple

Apple is releasing the iPhone 5 this week and Sprint is planning to offer it with an unlimited data plan.
~
I'll be trading in my Blackberry soon.  The Apple technology is so advanced and the selection of useful applications is so vast, that you really can't say that you are utilizing cutting edge technology unless you have one.
~
The ease of use and the intuitive nature of the device bringing personal communication together with a comprehensive library of applications that cover personal interests and business data, has leveled the playing field, where the world's knowledge fits neatly in our pockets and not just in libraries or corporate boardrooms.
~
Apple is an amazing company that has led the way in making the information revolution accessible to all of us.   Watch what happens to Sprint stock with the addition of the iPhone 5....   especially in light of this Nanepashemet Blog endorsement.
